GINIKA.
Episode 1

Knock! Knock!

" Who is there?"

"It's me Aina, hope you are not naked because I am with someone" she said.

"Oh I am o, please hold on, give me two minute let me put on something" she said from inside.

"Why didn't you lock the door from behind? What if I just open without knowing you are not dressed up?" Aina exclaimed.

Aina walked in with him.

His name is Ephraim, Slim, tall and dark. His beard is well kept and his medicated glasses are well aligned with the shape of his face.

They went in.

Ginika was clad in a short gown that is a bit above her knees, showing her spotless legs.

Although the gown was for Aina, her room mate and it's a long one but it's a bit shorter for her because of her height.

Her fair complexion could illuminate the darkness out of the dark room, a dimple to compliment her left cheek and a bit of gap teeth in between her incisor and canine.

She curled herself in a corner of the room as Aina and Ephraim walked in.

The room was arranged in a student setting.

A 4 inch bed on the floor, a trolley beside the bed full of body care creams and other body treatment creams. On the wall was nailed a native hanger with clothes hanging and right under it was a table filled with books and a wooden chair.

The other side of the bed was a gas, pots, plates and other cooking gadgets. The floor was laced with rubber carpet and the only window in the room was covered with a flowered cotton that has the same pattern with their bedspread.

"You can have your seat please" said Aina as she pointed at the wooden chair.

Ephraim sat and adjusted his glasses.

"Erhmmm...this is my roommate Ginika, we met at the Nysc camp and became friend, luckily for us we were posted to the same town but different PPA" Aina Introduced Ginika to him

Ginika curled herself at the corner of the bed, she had a small novel in her hand. She peeped above the novel she initially held up with both hands and waved at him with a little smile. Ephraim smiled back without a word.

She resumed her book.

"So this is where I will be spending the next 1 year, you can see it's not like your luxurious house back in the city" said Aina.

" This is not permanent and I wish you would join me in the said luxurious building when you pass out" Ephraim said with a bit of assurance.

Aina scoffed.

"You better wake up from that dream, I already told you that we can only be friends, I am not ready for any relationship for now, i need to be sure of my life" she replied.

Ginika stood up with her book and walked briskly towards the door. She was about to open the door when Aina spoke up.

"Babes, where are you going?" She quizzed.

"I just want to have some fresh air outside and also give you guys some privacy" she replied.

"No no, please come back, Ephraim is not someone that you can excuse us for, and aside from that you want that Effiong guy to start disturbing you again, you know how stubborn he can be" she said jokingly.

Ginika heaved a deep breath and went back to her corner.

Ephraim's gaze was not off Ginika even as she spoke with Aina.

"Your friend is more calm, how come you both became intimate friends?" Ephraim asked.


"Well, you can say that again, that is her nature and this is mine, so you don't have to start the comparison story here" Aina replied promptly.

Ginika raised her head and gave a smile, her gaze caught Ephraim's and resumed back to her book.

Ephraim stared at his wrist watch.

" I should be going now before it gets too late. I heard it's hard to get buses to town here when it's getting late because of the bad shape of the road, so let me take advantage of the light" he said.

"Okay then, thanks for visiting, let's see you off the road" said Aina.

Ephraim was about standing up, he grunted in pain and held his chest, he slowly sat back with his head down. He held the edge of the table firmly and placed the other on his chest.

"Are you okay?" Aina quizzed as she moved closer to him and touched his back. This caught Ginika' attention.

She looked up at him. " What's wrong, is he okay?" She quizzed.

Ephraim didn't say anything, he held his chest and breathed hard.

Confusion was carved on the ladies faces, Ginika jumped up from the bed, got a glass of water and handed it to Aina to give him. He collected the water and rushed it.

They got worried and checked on him, he only answered all questions thrown at him with a gesture. He sweat profusely and coughed.

Episode 2

Few seconds later, he spoke up.

"I'm sorry ladies, I'm fine now"

"Are you sure? You dont look like someone that is fine and besides what was that, you scare the hell out of us" Aina said as she looked into Ginika's face.

"I'm sorry, I need to get going now before it's too late, it's getting darker already" he said.

"Are you sure you can travel like this and aside that, it's getting…"

Aina interrupted.

" He said he would be on his way and I'm sure he is better now, aren't you Ephraim?"

He nodded in affirmation and stood up gently, Ginika supported him to stand up. Ginika's expression wasn't sure of what Aina said.

She looked into Aina's face with a pitiful expression that shows care for Ephraim but she totally ignored her expression and replied to her with a blunt frown.

Ephraim walked out in a calculated step while they both followed him. His steps were slow and his legs fiddled faintly as he took each step. Aina held his hand in support of his movement.

Ginika came along from behind. A motorcycle sped by and Aina stopped him. Ephraim sat on the motorcycle and faced the ladies.

"I am sorry for scaring you, it's just a mere medical issue, I will go straight to the hospital when I get to town, nice meeting you Ginika, I hope I didn't mess up my first day with you" he said with a faint smile.

"No, it's fine, please take good care of yourself." Ginika replied with a smile.

" You should get going now before it gets darker than this." said Aina. The motorcycle sped off.

Ginika walked into the house, Aina walked briskly to her and pulled her back.

"Babe, what was that all about?" She exclaimed.

Ginika looked at her quizzically.

"What was what? What are you talking about?

" really? You don't know? Why are you trying to make him stay back? " she yelled with anger written all over her face.

Ginika looked confused.

"Aina, that man was dying, I thought we could take him to the hospital here or something and aside that its not safe for him to travel, what if his not healthy enough for the hurley and burley nature of the road, he might not get help, I was just concerned and that's all, after all, she is your friend and you are supposed to care for him because he traveled down to visit you" Ginika expressed.

Aina scoffed and stared at her sarcastically.
"Really, did I tell you all that? You want him to die here? I don't know him from anywhere, he is just a guy I met at the mall when I went to the city, and he offered to pay me a visit, I only granted this one request after thousands of request and you expect me to start treating him as my boyfriend, what if he dies, you want to send me to jail abi? Alakoba"

She hissed and walked back into the house.

Ginika stood stagnant and watched her as she headed into the house. She sighed and headed in too.
She was about to enter their room when Effiong came out of his room.
It was a three bedroom apartment where different people occupied different rooms.
Aina and Ginika occupied a room as a serving corp member, Effiong, the said crypto currency guy and a bit of yahoo boy occupied the other while a bank worker occupied the third room. The sitting room was left empty except for a plastic chair.
"Ginika, how are you? You look worried, are you okay?" He asked.
The sight of Effiong made Ginika roll her eyes because she knew she was about to hear his usual lines again and he won't let her in if she didn't say something promising.
"Effiong I'm fine and I have told you times without number that my name is Ginika not Girika, stop calling my name with your accent" she replied.

" That's him ehn, see Girika, Abasi is hearing me, I really rike you ehn, see, I will take good care of you, remme take you to akwa ibom and make you the Queen of my virrage, (village) you are too beautiful to be ignored " he said.

Ginika looked tired.

"See Effiong, I have heard you, we will talk about it some other time, I need to go have some rest" she said, opened the door and went in.

"Girika, wait, should I prepare edika ikon with bitterrif for you? It will wash away all your worries" she exclaimed.

"But what karai do to wash away rall this akwaibom intoration sef?" He said and went back inside.

Aina laid on the bed when Ginika entered.

She went for the chair, picked her book and continued reading. She was unrest, the urge to talk to Aina wouldn't let her rest.
"Babe, I didn't mean to interfere in your affair, I just couldn't help but show concern, it reminded me of the same scenario with my brother and I showed no care, he didn't make it and it haunts me till today, that was how i learnt that little things we do matters a lot, I am sorry" she apologised and resumed back to her reading.
Guilt filled up Aina, she raised from the bed and crawled to her.
" I'm so sorry for your brother, it's not that I am heartless too, I was only scared and didn't know what to do, I'm sorry too" she said.
She held her hand and they exchanged smiles.

Episode 3

2 hours later.

Aina was making dinner while Ginika was ironing her khaki for the next day's CDS.

" Aina, has he called you? She quizzed.

"Who?" She replied.

"Ephraim of course, is he home now?" She asked.

"I didn't see his call, I have even forgotten to call him to confirm his safe arrival" Said Aina.

"Haba now, this is almost 8pm, since 4pm, be a nice girl, you don't treat people like that, pick up your phone and call" she said.

Aina rolled her eyes.

"Okaay, madam the nice"

She picked her phone and dialed his number, but no one picked, she dropped the phone.

"He didn't pick, maybe he is angry, I have tried" she said sarcastically and resumed her cooking.

"Aina, come on! He might not be with the phone and even if he is angry, it is normal, call him again" said Ginika.

Aina looked at her quizzically.

"Ginika wait o, what is this thing with you and Ephraim, why are you on his side? Do you like him?" She quizzed.

"Come off that Aina, I am only a human that knows that we should care for one another, Ephraim is not my kind of man, I just want to make sure he arrives home safely and also know he is fine because he is ill, that's all. So be nice girl, call him again" she said.

Aina smacked her lips and scoffed.

"Whatever!" She said as she dialed his number again.

She was lucky this time, it was picked but she heard the voice of a lady instead.

"Hello, Ephraim, are you home now?" she asked.

" Hello, I don't know the owner of this phone, all I know is there was a fatal accident a few minutes ago and all the victims have been transported to Higher Healing hospital along royalty road" the other person at the other end said.

" Jesus! What! Fatal accident? Oh my God! Erhmmm..ehrmm..please.." She stuttered.

Ginika jumped up.

"What is the matter, what happened? Is he okay? She quizzed but Aina froze, she couldn't say a word.

Ginika snatched the phone off her hand and spoke to the person.

" Hello, please what happened? " she asked.

The picker explained what she explained to Aina and it left Ginika worried.

They paced and wandered the room in confusion.

"We should go to the said hospital, we should go and check up on him, he didn't know anyone in this town, we should go and see if he is okay" Ginika suggested.

Aina looked confused and her expression revolted Ginika's suggestion. It was clearly written on her face. She panted hard.

"Don't even give me that look Aina, you will stop the cooking, dress up and go to that hospital now" she exclaimed.

They rushed out of their room in disarray.

They got into the cab and headed to the hospital.

There was an obvious unrest.

Memories visited Ginika.

She got lost in her one thoughts.

She had a flashback memory.

FOUR YEARS AGO.

"Ginika, I am not feeling fine, I think my blood is getting hot and I am getting uncomfortable" Daniel said as he grunt in pain.

Ginika was buried in her book, she ignored him. He cried and wallowed on the bed.

"Ginika, please I am not getting myself" he exclaimed.

She snapped at him. "What? Leave me alone, who knows where you got yourself harmed, I don't have time for this, I will call mum for you" she said, picked up her book and left the room.

She sat outside reading when she heard the horn or the car blaring, it was her mother's car, she ran to the gate to open up.

"What are you doing out here and where is your brother?" Her mum quizzed.

"I'm just here to read, he is inside" she replied.

She resumed her reading. She suddenly heard a scream from inside.

" Help! Help! Ginika help!!" She exclaimed.

She ran inside and saw his brother lying lifelessly in her mother's hand.

" Get the key to the car, get the key!" She yelled.

Ginika ran to pick the key and also joined her mum in lifting Daniel into the car.

She sped to the family hospital while the mother sat with Daniel on her lap at the back of the car, she called his name and prayed.

They got to the hospital, Ginika rushed out of the car and sped into the hospital for help, the nurses rushed out with a stretcher and placed him on it. He was rushed into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Ginika and her mother were denied access into the ICU, they paced the corridor of the hospital restlessly, her mother cried and prayed simultaneously while guilt was carved on Ginika's face.

Her heart raced and could almost escape from the cage or her ribs.

Few minutes later, the doctor came out of the ICU. His head dropped, a sad face.

They ran to him.

"Doctor, how is he? Can we go and see him now?" They asked.

He sighed.

" Only if he was brought in earlier, I am sorry Mrs James, Daniel is gone" he said and walked away.
