Episode 5

The thought of finding Ephraim didn't leave Ginika's head, the thought of her brother was also messing with her sanity.
She dozed off in her thoughts.
Aina's phone rang, she laid beside Ginika after speaking with an unknown person over the phone.
Few minutes later, there was a knock on the door, it woke them.
Aina rushed to open the door, it was Ben, her newly found boyfriend.
"Please come in." she said.
Ginika woke and cleared her eyes to have a clear vision of the visitor.
" Ben? What are you doing here at this time of the night?" She asked.
Aina jumped in. She packed her Nysc regalia in her bag and moved towards the door.
" I will be sleeping over at his place tonight, I asked him to come pick me, I will see you tomorrow girlfriend" she said.
Ginika was confused and disappointed.
"Are you serious right now? You want to leave me and go with him, have you forgotten we will still go back to the hospital tomorrow to…"
Aina interrupted.
" I'll see you at CDS tomorrow, have a nice night" Aina said, held Ben's hand and walked out together.
"What happened?, what is she talking about?" Ben asked.
"It's nothing dear, what do you have at home, I am famished" she said as they walked away.
Ginika was bemused and confused.
She sat on the floor feeling clueless.
There was another knock on the door.
She screamed.
" what else are you looking for, go and leave me alone!"
"Girika, its me Effiong, hope orris fine, I did nor see you since, are you okay?" He asked.
She had a deep breath.
"Effiong, sorry I didn't know it was you, I am fine thank you, I went somewhere" she said.
She opened the door and joined him outside.
" Are you okay?" He asked.
"Yes I am, thank you Effiong, I am only hungry" she replied.
He rushed in, brought out a bowl, milk and a pack of cereal.
"Take as much as you want." he said.
Ginika smiled.
"Thank you"
She poured the cereal and water it with milk, she devoured it.
" I am sorry about your friend, I heard everything you said before you went out, hope you get to see him?" Effiong asked.
Ginika sighed.
"Thanks for your concern, we are yet to find him and Aina is giving up despite him being her friend, I just pray he is okay" she said.
"Even if I didn't know your motive behind your care, I can understand what it means when someone has a good heart, a good heart is gold, just like the lace of a sunflower" said Effiong.
Ginika paused and stared at him.
"Did you just say sunflower?" She quizzed.
Effiong looked at her confusingly.
"Yes I did, is there anything wrong with that?" He asked.
Ginika noticed she overreacted, and she cooled off.
"Sorry, no, I am just curious." she said.
"Okay then, you can take more if that is not enough" he said and Ginika smiled.
She went back after eating and slept. Her deeds haunted her both live and in dream, one of which screamed into her conscience.
She screamed.
" you killed him with your uncare attitude, you killed my son, I will never forgive you, despite taking you as my child, I never discriminate but all you could do is to pay me back with evil, your mother will never rest in heaven for giving birth to a devil like you" she yelled.
Ginika wept uncontrollably as she wallowed on the floor, she knew she was guilty and it killed her more.
She continued.
" you can have your father's house to yourself, I have nothing here anymore, I am leaving and I am sure he too will be happy in heaven for seeing his evil child inheriting his property "
Ginika cried out loud.
" I am sorry mummy, I didn't know, please don't leave me, please...you are all I have...I am sorry, please, I love you mummy, please don't leave me" she cried uncontrollably.
She held her leg and pleaded but everything she said went off her listening ears.
" if you love me...Ginika, if you love me you would love my son,despite your health condition, I loved you like my child, took care of you since you were 5 after your mother died, no one knew I was not your mother, I gave you everything a mother would give a child, but you repaid me with evil. You have been a heartless child, you are selfish and self centered, you care about no one, if you want to move far in life, change!"
She said, snapped her leg off her grip and left the house with her belongings.
The conscience of not being caring about her brother which eventually led to his death haunted her for years. Also, her step mother's words already casted an everlasting mark on her heart.
"You are heartless, selfish and self centered"
And these words had taken the peace in her heart away since then.
She would do anything to find the peace back even if it is to sacrifice all her effort to help someone just to prove to nature that it was coincident and that was not who she was.

Ginika sat on the bed as memories ate deep into her conscience.
She sobbed.
Ephraim's thoughts came to her mind too.
If finding Ephraim would bring back a fraction of her peace, she wouldn't mind giving it her all.

Episode 4

She passed out immediately.

Ginika couldn't cry, her mind yelled into her conscience.

"You killed your brother, you killed him!".

"Ginika! Ginika!!" Aina's voice tapped her back to consciousness.

"Come out of the cab, we are at the hospital gate." she said.

She alighted and followed Aina.

They looked confused because they didn't have any clue of where to head.

"Let's go to the accident or emergency unit since it's an accident." Ginika suggested.

They looked for the hospital map and searched for the emergency unit. They got it and headed down there.

It wasn't a nice view for Ginika, seeing blood everywhere gave her anxiety attacks but she kept moving.

On a part of the unit were people crying while moving their dead to the vehicle, while some seemed to be praying for the survival of theirs.

Noise from victims feeling pain strings out from every corner of the unit.

The ladies got confused.

"Who are we to ask now?" Aina asked.

They wandered around hoping to get information of the accident from someone but no one seemed to be fit to give them the answers to what they wanted.

"Let's go into one of the offices and ask someone now." Ginika suggested.

Aina revolted.

" Are we not taking this too far? Shouldn't we just leave here and go back? I don't have a mind for all of these Ginika, don't let us put ourselves in trouble, no one would know he came to visit us" she said.

Ginika stared into her eyes hoping to see an iota of human left in her but none was found.

"Aina really?, did you just say that? Well, I am glad to tell you that they will find out because your number is written all over his dialed and received calls and you could be located through that!" She exclaimed.

They argued and bothered, their opinion went to a different pole.

Ginika sighted an elderly nurse approaching them, she would be in her early 50s, she had her stethoscope around her neck and she seemed to be in a hurry to get somewhere.

"Let's ask her." said Ginika.

"Ginika, no, wait, don't… Oh my God!" Aina heaved a sigh of regret.

Ginika walked briskly toward the fast walking woman.

"Good evening ma, good evening ma" she greeted.

Without looking at who was greeting her, the nurse replied.

"Please I don't attend to patients on the move, go and sit down and wait for your turn" she said promptly.

Ginika didn't give up.

Whe walked briskly after her.

"Please ma, I just want to ask a question, I am not here for treatment" she panted in exhaustion as she ran after her.

"Okay what is it?" She quizzed.

"I heard there was a fatal accident on the road to the city this evening and we were told they were all brought in here, my friend is one of the victims…"

The nurse interrupted.

"Oh that? no one survived that accident I think, they were brought in here a few hours ago and I'm not sure anyone survived it, you can see them at the emergency unit for more information….Nurse Tola, meet me in my office" she said, left Ginika and walked away with another nurse.

Ginika got petrified.

She watched the nurses as they walked away.

Aina met her at the spot.

"I have been looking for you, what did she say? She asked.

Ginika stuttered.

" Erhmm...she said he must be in one of the wards and if I could just go around to look for him I might be lucky" she explained.

"Are you sure that is what she said?" Aina quizzed.

She turned to her and looked at her quizzically.

" What were you expecting Aina, were you expecting her to say something else?" She queried.

Aina's expression was disappointing to her, she left her on the spot and moved away, Aina followed her.

They moved from wards to wards and he was nowhere to be found.

"There is one more place to check, the ICU, let's go there" Ginika suggested.

"Are you nuts? Who would allow you into the ICU, see, I am tired and I can't move an inch, I am going home" Aina exclaimed and left her on the spot.

She wanted to go to the ICU but had a rethink, it was getting late, they were famished.

She joined Aina and they boarded a bus.

It was a moment of silence between them before Aina broke it.

"Oh God, I regret letting this guy visit me, it's the worst decision I've ever made" she said.

Ginika gave no response.

"Do you think he's head? Or don't you think he survived and has left for the city? Ginika, don't you think so?" She quizzed.

Ginika folded her hand, a sad expression with a sweating palm.

"We must be sure he is okay which means we must look everywhere for him" she replied.

It wasn't a good day for both of them, they got home feeling exhausted.
